I have a confession to make. I am a sugar-aholic. There, I said it. Sugar is my weakness, Iโll admit it. I love desserts, I love baking, and I am a sweet freak. Am I alone? I doubt it.
Sugar consumption is on the rise, my friends and (all kidding aside) some even say that it is addictive. Studies show that too much added sugar consumption can lead to fatigue, lower energy levels, belly bloat, acne, weight gain, higher blood pressure and/or cholesterol levels, and a higher risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Yipes! There is something we can do about it. We (yes, I’m speaking to myself too!) can work to limit our added sugar consumption.
The American Heart Associationย (AHA) advises that women should consume no more than 6 teaspoons of added sugar a day (about 100 calories or 25 grams), and men should consume no more than 9ย teaspoons of added sugar a day (about 150 calories or 36 grams). So, it is feasible to have some sugar in your diet, but within reason. When I read these guidelines, I started thinking about what I could do to refine my diet. Shortly thereafter… boom! My idea for a sugar detox challenge was born. I want to invite YOU to do a 7-Day Sugar Detox beginning January 18th. Are you with me?
Letโs do this!
WHAT IS IT?
The 7-Day Sugar Detox will coincide with Sugar Awareness Week, which is January 18-24, 2021. It will be an opportunity to remove refined sugar from your diet. This detox is intended to be simple, not overly restrictive, educational, and transformative. I hope that by the end of the detox you can adopt at least one change that you can sustain going forward.
You will be able to choose what you keep or remove from your diet. But I encourage you to stick to the AHA guidelines (mentioned above). To do so, youโll have to read nutrition labels, which is a good thing because it helps to build awareness about what youโre eating. Hereโs a list of foods to consider removing from your diet:
Youโll see that processed foods and snacks are on the list. Sugar is hidden in many processed foods (i.e., sauces, condiments). I encourage you to analyze which processed foods youโre consuming and consider cooking these foods for yourself and eating whole foods during the 7-Day Sugar Detox. HOW WILL WE DO IT?
7-Day Sugar Detox participants will be invited to join a private Facebook Group. Iโll give you tips for success, a food planner, recipes and encouragement along the way. The group will be supportive, share successes, and exchange ideas. It will be fun!
The sign-up is super simple. Just go here to sign-up and get your food planner for the challenge. You’ll get a link to join the private Facebook group within a separate email. Also, tell your friends, and encourage them to do the challenge with you!
So, I ask again. Are you with me? Are you willing to do something healthy for you? The timing of this detox is not ironic and is completely deliberate. Donโt miss this opportunity to create real, positive change in your diet. Follow me on Instagram, and be on the lookout for further details about how to prepare for the detox. Let’s get ready to do a 7-Day Sugar Detox! Youโve got this!
