Happy Earth Day friends!
I don’t know about you, but I’ve noticed a lot of retailers have been gearing up for this day all month long. I think it’s a wonderful way to celebrate our wonderful planet and commit to doing things to protect it as well. Earth Day activities can also benefit you and your wellness. I’m gonna give you 3 things you can do starting today to boost your wellness while celebrating Earth Day!
Plant a Garden (Big or Small)
You should become a gardener. That’s right, go plant a garden friends! Fresh plants benefit the Earth in a variety of ways. First, plants naturally cleanse the air and the ground by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen and water into the environment. Second, plants remove chemicals and bacteria from the air. This improves the air quality inside your home, and outside as well.
But the benefits don’t stop there! By planting an herb garden, you’ll have fresh herbs to use in your meals at all times. Remember how I’ve talked about cooking more at home? Having fresh herbs enables you to: cook mouth-watering meals when you want to, have more control regarding the ingredients within your meals, save money by cooking more at home, and reduce carbon footprints by making fewer trips to the grocery store.
Don’t have a lot of space to plant a garden? No worries! With gadgets like this you can grow an herb garden in your kitchen. It’s not expensive, doesn’t take up a ton of space, and benefits you and the environment. What more could you ask for?
Walk, Don’t Drive
As humans, we’re designed to be physically active. Unfortunately, it’s really easy to be sedentary because of what we do every day. We sit at our computers for hours at a time. And we drive to and fro. Unfortunately, driving emits carbon monoxide into the environment and creates noise. This negatively impacts our air quality and the environment around us. In fact, one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions from human activities in the United States is transportation. It’s these greenhouse gases that make our planet warmer (a.k.a., global warming).
Here’s what you can do for yourself and the Earth. Make a concerted effort to walk more often. I have a few ideas that you can implement starting today:
- When you go to the grocery store or to the mall, don’t park in the closest parking spot. Instead, park further away and force yourself to walk more.
- Start a walking routine in which you walk for 15 minutes a couple of times a week, or perhaps every day. This will help you clear your head and get some vitamin D (which your body produces when exposed to sunlight).
- Don’t drive to your mailbox. Take a walk and pick up your mail along the way.
- Invite other people to walk with you and use it as a time to reconnect with others.
If you use some or all of these ideas, I know you’ll see huge benefits in your life!
Shop Sustainable Brands and Products
A sustainable brand is one that makes a concerted effort to be conscious of the environment when it comes to packaging, production, and ingredients. In fact, Harvard Business School defines sustainability in business as doing business without negatively impacting the environment, community, or society as a whole. Some sustainable businesses are also Certified B Corporations. Whenever you see the B Corp Certification, it means the business is meeting the highest standards when it comes to social and environmental performance.
When shopping for sustainable products, look for recyclable product packaging. Regarding production processes, question where products are made, the chemicals involved in the production, and the type of labor used to produce the items. And it helps to be very aware when it comes to product ingredients because some can negatively impact your health. Too many ingredients disrupt hormones, lead to infertility, and are linked to certain cancers. Here’s a good list of ingredients to avoid.
For these reasons, I’m very particular about my personal care products. As an example, I love products like this because it’s produced by a Certified B Corporation, it’s packaged in a glass bottle, and the ingredients are clearly disclosed. For instance, the serum contains jojoba bubbles and tripeptides to hydrate skin almost instantly. And it works beautifully! But here’s what I love the most–it helps my makeup look fresh and fabulous for hours–even in our Texas summer heat! I’m obsessed with this serum because it literally checks all the boxes: provides healthy glowing skin, multitasking, and sustainable. Bravo!
There you have it, friends. I’ve given you 3 ways to boost your wellness while celebrating Earth Day. I hope you have a fantastic day today and definitely share this with your friends.
